Smiths Detection to Upgrade Security at Fukuoka Airport in Japan

(08/02/24) Fukuoka International Airport (FUK) in Japan is upgrading the security systems in place at its north and south domestic checkpoints.

The airport has chosen to install 12 HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX X-ray scanners and 12 iLane A20 automatic tray return systems from Smiths Detection.

The HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX, a computed tomography (CT) X-ray scanner produces high-resolution volumetric 3D images for quicker and deeper baggage assessment and low false-alarm rates.

Implementation of the new scanner will allow passengers to leave their liquids and electronics in their hand luggage, helping to speed up security screening, without compromising on safety.

Fukuoka Airport is upgrading security with solutions from Smiths Detection

The iLane A20, a next-generation fully automated tray return system, streamlines the screening process and helps to reduce passenger bottlenecks.

The HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX and iLane A20 are expected to be able to scan more than 250 passengers per hour, approximately 1.5 times the previous throughput of around 170 passengers per hour.

Smiths Detection’s technology will be installed by the end of March 2024.

Fukuoka Airport domestic checkpoint will become the third airport in Japan to harness the power of Smiths Detection’s 3D X-ray screening technology, alongside Haneda Airport domestic checkpoint and Naha Airport domestic checkpoint.

In total, 42 units of Smiths Detection’s 3D X-ray scanners are already in use in Japan, as well as 143 iLane tray return systems.
